Kia Ora Ogletree! (Hello in Maori)
Flat Aubie had such a wonderful time in Auckland, New Zealand! When he arrived he immediatly noticed that the weather is much different from home. When he left Auburn it was cold but here in Auckland it is spring. Aubie started to see the town right away. He visited the beaches wearing his jandals (flip flops) and togs (swimsuit). When he was at the beach Aubie noticed that some of the people who live here talk funny. They speak English but just with a different kind of accent.
He then decided to go to the zoo and learn more about the animals in New Zealand. He learned that the only native mammal to New Zealand is a bat. He also learned that the national bird is the kiwi. Unfortunately, he was not able to meet the kiwi since they are nocturnal and are very hard to spot.
The first people to live on the island are called Maoris. Aubie went to one of the Maori villages and was greeted by a lot of men dancing around in skirts. Aubie later learned that the dancing was a greeting welcoming him into their village. He enjoyed a nice feast (called a hangi) where the food was cooked in the ground.
Aubie had a wonderful time in New Zealand but is excited to get back to all his friends and family in Auburn!
Wow! Flat Aubie, you got to see some really unique things! And I always thought a kiwi was only a fruit. Now I know it is a bird, too. Thanks, Flat Aubie, for teaching me something new today!
